Classes, Practices, and Everything In Between: Being a Successful Student-Athletes at Friends University

A day in the life of a student-athlete at Friends University takes time management, discipline, and dedication, but it’s also full of community and support. As a current cross country and track athlete, I’ve learned how much structure and encouragement this university provides to help students succeed both on and off the field. My major is health sciences on a pre-dental track with minors in business administration and marketing.
6:00 A.M. – Morning Practice
The day starts early with practice at 6:15 a.m. Thankfully, the compact campus makes getting around easy, and the athletic facilities are just a short walk away. Morning practices are focused and efficient, which helps us get quality training while still keeping our academic schedules in mind. Having teammates beside me keeps me motivated, even during tough workouts, and our coaches are great at pushing us while still showing care.
8:20 A.M. – Breakfast and Recharge
After practice, I head back to my apartment-style housing for a shower and breakfast. On-campus housing is quiet and convenient, and being able to live close to everything helps reduce stress. Nutrition is a big focus, making sure you fuel properly in order to perform at your best. I personally make eggs, bagels, and protein shakes in my room, but the dining hall (Casado) offers a wide range of healthy options for all diets, which makes it easier to refuel properly after workouts.
9:00 A.M. – Academics Come First
My first class of the day is Organic Chemistry. Balancing science courses with athletics can sound intimidating, but professors here really understand the student-athlete schedule and allow for accommodations, like switching test times when athletes have to travel that day. Friends University encourages small class sizes, which means instructors know you by name and are willing to help you stay on track. Sitting next to teammates or classmates I’ve gotten to know also keeps me accountable and supported.
10:00 A.M. – Work and Involvement on Campus
I work a short shift at the Casado Campus Center, the center of student life. On-campus jobs are designed with student-athletes in mind, offering flexibility around practices and classes. It’s a calm, friendly place where I can catch up on homework and chat with other students.
11:00 A.M. – More Classes With Community
My next class is Physics, and it’s another chance to connect with classmates who share the same drive. Having teammates in class makes a big difference. We encourage each other to stay focused and find ways to keep learning fun.
12:00 P.M. – Lunch and Friends
By lunchtime, Casado is bustling with students. I meet up with friends, and we all eat in the newly renovated cafeteria. Whether you’re looking for a quick wrap or a full meal, there’s always good food. These lunch hours often become one of the best parts of the day, giving me a chance to slow down and laugh together before heading to afternoon classes.
1:00 P.M. – Afternoon Academics
My last class of the day is Content Marketing, which I take as part of my marketing minor. Friends University encourages students to explore different interests and gain well-rounded experiences, which I really value.
2:00 P.M. – Study and Recovery Time
After classes, I usually recover in the athletic training room or start homework early. The trainers are incredible resources who care deeply about injury prevention and recovery, knowing performance depends on it.
4:00 P.M. – Strength and Conditioning
A few times a week, we have weight training led by certified strength coaches. They tailor workouts to our sport, making sure we stay strong and healthy for our sport. It’s another reminder that Friends truly invests in every athlete’s long-term development.
5:00 P.M. – Dinner and Team Bonding
Dinner at Casado with teammates is always a highlight. We stay for a while talking, laughing, and just being college students. These moments of connection are what make Friends feel like home.
7:00 P.M. – Winding Down and Staying Focused
Evenings are for homework, intramurals, or a quick trip to the store. I make sure to stay on top of my online marketing class and lab reports, keeping my 4.0 GPA goal in mind.
9:00 P.M. – Lights Out
By the end of the day, I’m ready for bed. Getting enough sleep is nonnegotiable for athletes (and high performing students), and I’ve learned how important recovery is to success. Friends University gives us the structure and support we need to perform at our best academically, athletically, and personally. All that’s left is for me to do my part and get rest to do it all over again tomorrow.
